Highways, Bridges & Roadway Reconstruction
Background SMC’s technical staff has completed a significant number of surveying projects for highway, bridge, road and bike trail design in the United States and Ireland. Locally, more than 130 project assignments have been completed for the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) to perform bridge and highway surveys in which the field data was captured using Trimble/Geodimeter “total stations”. Data was captured with line coding to facilitate preparation of final plans by MHD’s own drafting staff or by SMC personnel. Digital Terrain Models (DTM) were also developed and delivered to MHD for the use of their design consultants. SMC has successfully undertaken projects of this nature using aerial survey techniques supplemented with field survey to capture data relevant to the design criteria of a particular project. This combination of techniques ensures the timely completion of projects while adhering to our philosophy: “the key to accurate surveying and mapping still lies in the skillful use of the right instruments and techniques guided by seasoned judgment”. Technology/Methodology Low-level color aerial photography is used frequently to generate the base mapping with the flying height being chosen after particular attention is given to the contour interval required for the project. SMC’s technical staff plans the flight lines and develops the ground control configuration. The location of existing federal and/or state geodetic control monuments are researched and targeted if appropriately positioned within the footprint of the aerial photography. Suitable survey monuments are installed and targeted and their respective positions established using GPS surveying techniques. Level surveys are conducted to connect the project control network to federal/state benchmarks of appropriate accuracy. Additional control is established using “total station" distance and angular measuring instruments and a combined adjustment of the satellite and terrestrial measurement data is undertaken. Supplemental Field Surveys For some projects, the aerial survey data may be sufficient for project design. Generally speaking, field cross sections are required and typically obtained from the back of sidewalk or right-of-way (R/W) line to the corresponding location on the opposite side of the street. In urban areas, particular attention is paid to the acquisition of sill elevations for buildings that directly abut the R/W and in driveways beyond the R/W lines. This procedure is followed so that the design engineer can address the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additionally, supplemental field surveys are undertaken to locate surface evidence of utilities and wetland flags. Depending on the project requirements, additional field surveys can be undertaken to locate details not visible on the photography that are required by the project design team. Typically, a field edit walk-through will be conducted to identify pavement, curb, wall, underground utilities, R/W, property lines and fence types. Bridge Renovation Project - Field Survey
Value Added Services Following the preliminary design effort, SMC’s staff provides value added services with the preparation of easement and/or taking plans. This task involves research to obtain appropriate data (deeds, recorded plans and street layouts) relative to the location of property lines and field surveys to locate property monuments that may not have been located during the supplemental field surveys. SMC’s staff prepares easement and/or taking plans along with descriptions of the affected properties. The plans are suitable for recording at the Registry of Deeds in Massachusetts or appropriate county or municipal facilities in other states. A further value added service, provided by SMC, is the staking of easements and/or property lines during the construction phase of a project.
